A message from Yoohei Kawakami of [Champagne]

“There are probably also people who think ‘What good is music at a time like this?’

But to me music is as important as water, food, and electricity.

If possible, I’d like for it to reach you.

Right now we may not be able to ‘enjoy sound’, but through ‘sound’ I truly hope that you can find some ‘comfort’.”

Yoohei Kawakami (Vo./Gt. [Champagne])

3/3 [Champagne] tour 2011 I Wanna Go To Hawaii. ~いや、総長マジで~@千葉LOOK

mudy on the 昨晩 (mudy on the sakuban):  千葉LOOK is an excellent venue (good size and sound quality), but it does suffer a bit by having a low stage.  As a result, I was unable to see most of mudy’s performance, not that it mattered much, because they sounded fantastic.  After entering to their usual music (Au Pairs’ Sex Without Stress) they launched into a 45 minute set that had the audience hooked immediately.  During one of their MCs, Furusawa Hirokazu (Gt.) asked if anyone was seeing them play for the first time and the crowd was silent.  Normally this would be a bad sign, but in this case I believe that everyone in that room was familiar with and had a lot of love for mudy.  All of that great energy circulating the club was an excellent way to start the evening and get everyone excited for the main event.

[Champagne]:  This is what every [Champagne] live should aspire to.  The atmosphere was perfect, they played their hearts out and the fans were with them every step of the way.

2/26 Getting Better 15th Anniversary Party Tour 「festival」@下北沢CLUB Que

10 things Naoya Empire (Naoya Shimomoto (Vo.), PILLS EMPIRE) did during tonight’s set:

  1. During their first song, Demophobia, he climbed into the rafters and stage dived into the crowd, you know, just to ease into things.
  2. He utilized constant strobes to make his haircut look cool, this did wonders for his dancing as well.
  3. Grabbed a drumstick and took over one of the crash symbols, then an exposed ceiling pipe.
  4. Put on a winter scarf, mid-set, for no apparent reason.
  5. Used a mic stand as a weapon.
  6. Attempted to destroy the ventilation system and/or microphone by beating the two together repeatedly.
  7. Strung the hand mic from the rafters in an attempt to capture the audience’s screams as he cannonballed into them from above.
  8. Ran wild through the audience, WILD.
  9. Picked up a crowd surfer (who had made it on stage), spun him around like a rag doll, and returned him to the floor (and by returned him to the floor, I mean Naoya waded into the audience still carrying the kid and proceeded to dance and twirl him around a bit before letting him down).
  10. And finally, he collected two hand mics and stole the bassists’ microphone so that he could yell into 3 at one time.

[Champagne]:  I don’t have too much to say about [Champagne]’s set.  They were good (as usual), but they also seemed a bit reserved, which is somewhat strange if you look at the setlist.  There were, however, a couple of standout moments toward the end.  maakun had an amazing guitar solo at the end of Don’t Fuck With Yoohei Kawakami, and they really put everything they had into Underconstruction (especially Yoohei).  For the encore they played Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and another song, which was not Champagne Supernova (although Yoohei did find a way to insert Oasis into one of the instrumental breaks with the lines “How many special people change?  How many lives are living strange?”).  There was also a second encore, before which they managed to locate most of PILLS EMPIRE, who they brought onstage with them to sing one final song.

Setlist:
1. For Freedom
2. Yeah Yeah Yeah
3. My Blueberry Morning
4. Rocknrolla!
5. Revolution,My Friend
6. Cat 2
7. Don’t Fuck With Yoohei Kawakami
8. Underconstruction
9. city

2/10 [Champagne] Acoustic Mini Live@新宿TR

This is the second time I’ve seen [Champagne] do an acoustic set at Tower Records and they are…really good. I find them entertaining and generally amusing in most settings, but their in-store performances are something special. The sets may be short and a little bit awkward, but that’s what makes them so endearing. I just wish that there were more opportunities to see them unplugged.
Tonight, the highlight for me came during their sound check when they played part of かえりみち (my favorite song that you’ll probably never hear at a regular [Champagne] live). The set officially began with city, which doesn’t really require amps to sound amazing, followed by My Blueberry Morning (another acoustic-ready song). Rocknrolla! made the transition more easily than I expected, and with maakun adding a surprise scream to the mix it was still pretty rock’n’roll. Before playing 風邪をひいた時の歌, Yoohei talked a little bit about how he wrote the song during the time he spent as an office worker, before forming [Champagne]. And after a failed attempt to strike up a conversation about Valentine’s Day with the audience, they ended the set with You’re So Sweet & I Love You. Then we all got posters and went home. It was a very pleasant evening.

Setlist:
1. city
2. My Blueberry Morning
3. Rocknrolla!
4. Underconstruction
5. 風邪をひいた時の歌
6. You’re So Sweet & I Love You

[Champagne] – I Wanna Go To Hawaii. lyrics

All songs written and composed by Yoohei Kawakami.  Arranged and produced by [Champagne].

1. ?
I’m gonna be there
But I don’t know where
I know that place is big and bright for sure
But I don’t know where it’s at

I wanna a fortune
I wanna a Jaguar
But I want my future to be a secret
Coz it’s fun to grant
oh oh!

And when you’re asked
A question about
About your future occupation at the school
You are to make some answer straight out of the book they read

I know you have some kind of struggle
Inside the heart
But you wouldn’t show
And in the end you buy your future at the store

あなたにとって仕事って何ですか? (anata ni totte shigoto tte nan desu ka)
動機は? (douki wa)
目標? (mokuhyou)
問われた時 (towareta toki)

「OOです」と答えを決めた途端 (MARU MARU desu to kotae o kimeta totan)
全ての先が見えた様な気がして (subete no saki ga mieta you na ki ga shite)
つまらなくなった (tsumaranaku natta)

You’re gonna live a life
A life you own it
The choise you make and things you eat
Will affect your life until the end

I may regret it
But I don’t give a shit
I’m gonna live my life without a text
Just let it be
Oh oh

あなたにとって仕事って何ですか? (anata ni totte shigoto tte nan desu ka)
動機は? (douki wa)
目標? (mokuhyou)
問われて言った (towarete itta)

「わかりませんが、 (wakarimasen ga)
それを知る為に死ぬまで続けたいんです」 (sore o shiru tame ni shinu made tsudzuketain desu)

I’m gonna be there
But I don’t know where
I know that place is big and bright for sure
But I don’t know where it’s at

I wanna a fortune
I wanna a Jaguar
But I want my future to be a secret
Coz it’s fun to grant
Oh oh

I’m gonna live a life without a text book baby
Never need to tell me what to do lady
Find your own address without a GPS

What you gonna do when you got lost
At the place you never been before and after
Well
I guess that’s great part of your life
What do you think?
Oh oh

1/28 スペースシャワー列伝 JAPAN TOUR 2011@赤坂BLITZ

Last night was the SPACE SHOWER 列伝 JAPAN TOUR 2011 TOUR FINAL in 赤坂BLITZ.  This year marked the 10th anniversary of the RETSUDEN tour, which is an annual event, sponsored by SPACE SHOWER TV, aimed at promoting up-and-coming Japanese bands.  This year’s tour, which featured [Champagne], plenty, cinema staff, and モーモールルギャバン (MowMowLuLuGyaban), was the largest to date, including sold-out shows in 8 major cities across Japan.  RETSUDEN is more of a showcase than it is an actual concert, audiences are given the opportunity to sample the live performances of 4 great artists in one night, but the operation is similar to what one would find at a very short music festival (30 min. sets with very quick turn around).  That said, I’m extremely fond of the artists chosen for this year’s lineup and I got to spend the night listening to great music, so I’m not complaining.  Here are some impressions:

モーモールルギャバン:  This was my first time seeing MowMow, and I was not at all prepared for the level of Gary.  I should have been, but I wasn’t (for example, when he started taking off his clothes, I should have been prepared for the underwear to come off as well, but I wasn’t).  They were lovely, though, and extremely entertaining, I will definitely see them again.

Setlist:
1. 細胞9
2. POP! 烏龍ハイ
3. ユキちゃん
4. ユキちゃんの遺伝子
5. サイケな恋人

cinema staff:  I like cinema staff, but they’ve disappointed me in the past (EMTG Music Rise).  I came away from that show feeling like I had just watched part of a high school talent show, so I honestly wasn’t expecting much from them this time around.  I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that they’ve improved a lot in the last two months.  Last night they looked and sounded like a real band.  There were still plenty of antics to be had, like Tsuji’s impromptu stage dive, but they did away with a lot of the mock rockstar-ing that was such a turn-off for me at their previous shows.

Setlist:
1. AMK HOLLIC
2. 想像力
3. 第12感
4. daybreak Syndrome
5. 優しくしないで
6. KARAKURI in the skywalkers
7. Poltergeist

plenty:  I love plenty.  I just fucking love them.  They came on in the middle of a group of musicians who sound nothing like them and they were wonderful.  There is a place for awkward silence at every show and the best band to spend those pauses with is plenty.  Listen, please:

ねぇ、変わったのは君のほうだろ?

Setlist:
1. 理由
2. 最近どうなの?
3. 人との距離のはかりかた
4. 拝啓。皆さま
5. 枠

[Champagne]:  They were all business last night.  I believe that Yoohei may have actually been crowned the honorary King of Retsuden at some point during the tour, because he came out in a blazer and delivered the obligatory ‘support music’ speech.  They played with a somewhat lower volume of energy than I’ve seen from them in the past, but this didn’t stop fans from crowd surfing, etc.  It was a bit surprising when they ended their set with city (“a wonderful song for a wonderful city”), but they came back with “You’re So Sweet & I Love You” for their one-song encore.

Setlist:
1. For Freedom
2. Yeah Yeah Yeah
3. Rocknrolla!
4. Don’t Fuck With Yoohei Kawakami
5. city
Encore
6. You’re So Sweet & I Love You

Special encore:  All bands covering Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back in Anger”.   Champagne had their instruments, except for Yoohei, who took lead vocals (go figure) and abandoned his guitar, in favor of the tambourine.  T-Margherita (MowMow) had his bass, members of cinema staff added a 3rd bass, and electric and acoustic guitars, and Enuma-kun (plenty) brought his guitar on stage as well.  Everyone else was given tambourines, maracas, or egg shakers and Yuko-chan from MowMow also took full advantage of her close proximity to the gong.  Gary (MowMow) came out in his underwear with a tie around his head, and (I assume because he took his position as a role model for the young and impressionable junior-members of the tour so seriously) he convinced Tsuji-kun of cinema staff to do the same (minus the tie and toting a bottle of booze).  All in all it was the perfect end to a picture perfect evening.

[Champagne] – Rocknrolla! PV

I love this band (especially at 5 minutes and 28 seconds).
