the telephones – 2 PVs

The full-length PV for Yeah Yeah Yeah is finally up over at the telephones official YouTube channel. As is the PV for A A U U O O O, which was filmed on October 1st at one of my favorite live houses in Tokyo, 新宿MARZ! Fun fact: while you may very well see a crowd-surfing panda at MARZ, there will never be security staff there to catch them.

9/19 FREE THROW SAITAMA@北浦和KYARA

Hirotaka Maki: His 3-song set of retro dance pop opened the live portion of FREE THROW SAITAMA. Ryohei (the telephones) supported on bass.

Fragment: Fragment came out strong, laying down the gauntlet for a Saitama turf-war (they’re from Omiya) before launching into a fantastic 30 min. set. They delivered some really solid hip-hop beats that flowed together seamlessly, occasionally accenting their arrangements with a bit of electronic flair or hard rock edge. Nobu and Ishige formed an enthusiastically loud cheering section at the back of the pulsating crowd. After thanking FREE THROW and crediting the telephones with bringing the event to Saitama, they brought things down a bit with a quiet number for their last song.

石毛輝 (Ishige Akira, the telephones): Ishige seemed a bit nervous as he took the KYARA stage alone for the first time, but after a false start and a few computer jokes he began his set with an incredible performance of Good News. He followed with an upbeat new song and Favorite DJ, strutting back and forth across the stage and throwing his hands up, pumping up the already excited crowd. After slowing things down for Untitled, he announced a 2nd new song, saying that it was about the happiness and sadness we experience as children. It began with a long atmospheric introduction and ethereal high-pitched vocals, with heavy drum sections building tension through the middle. Fireworks was absolutely stunning. After the dust had settled, he brought his set to a satisfying close with Flowers On The Wall, shouting the last line completely off mic.

Setlist:
1. Good News
2. 新曲 (New Song)
3. Favorite DJ
4. Untitled
5. 新曲 (New Song)
6. Fireworks
7. Flowers On The Wall

8/23 Kings Vol.3@新木場STUDIO COAST

UPDATE: Check out RO69’s official live report for more details and some great pictures from the event. Added live footage of PILLS EMPIRE.

Doors opened at 4:00pm with Taira Daisuke (FREE THROW) providing the soundtrack as excited fans filed in to 新木場STUDIO COAST for Kings 3 (the fourth installment of the Kings event series).  He was joined at the DJ booth by Ishige Akira (Vo./Gt., the telephones), Jin Hirofumi (FREE THROW), and several other Kings members including Nobu (Keys, the telephones), who was bouncing around with a borrowed electric guitar and playing to the crowd for much of the set.

PILLS EMPIRE:  PILLS led the charge, Yuto (Dr.) entering first, followed by Kokubu (Gt./Synth.) and Kazuto (Ba./Synth.), their faces masked and wielding spray cans.  Then Naoya (Vo.) appeared, waving a large black flag above his head as he stalked back and forth across the stage.  They opened with Eins, Zwei, Drei and it didn’t take long for him to abandon his microphone stand and plunge headfirst into the crowd.  Tensions reached a boiling point during Suicide Candy and Naoya led the crowd in chants of “WE ARE PILLS EMPIRE! WE ARE KINGS!”.  He returned to the floor during Kubrick Syndicate, wading through the fans to balance himself precariously on the DJ booth, the PA booth, and the center barrier before allowing himself to be carried back to the the front.  When it was all over he climbed atop the speakers, lifting the mirrored flag high above his head, and saluted before tossing it to the ground and making his exit.  Jin took over at the DJ booth as the stage was reset for QUATTRO.

QUATTRO:  They began their set with Magic J, but suffered from technical difficulties with guitarist Ushioda Yuichi’s equipment, which Iwamoto Takeshi (Vo./Gt.) tried unsuccessfully to fix by wiggling his fingers at the stage crew.  The problems persisted through an extended MC, during which Iwamoto wished Kahadio (Dr.) a happy 20th birthday and attempted to stall by pimping out the remaining Kings goods.  Things seemed to be back on track as they continued their set, including two new songs (Flamingo and the band’s first Japanese song) and a preview of Oh, Susanna, off of their upcoming 7-inch single, which they used as the lead-in to Question#7.  They ended on a high note with Hey!, just as fans have come to expect.

THE BAWDIES:  There were a lot of BAWDIES fans in the crowd and they went wild when the band appeared kicking things off with TOO LATE.  They didn’t spend a lot of time on MCs, but their stage presence was impressive as always and they kept the hits coming with songs like JUST BE COOL, B.P.B, and HOT DOG.  During the handclap section of KEEP ON ROCKIN’, ROY called out to the audience, telling them that Kings wasn’t just made of the bands but that they were all Kings.  They ended their set with A NEW DAY IS COMIN’ and then Taira was back at the DJ booth, joined by kaoru (miila and the geeks) who, for some reason, was there and dancing around in a bra.

The Brixton Academy:  Naoto (Vo./Gt./Synth.) and Yone (Gt./Synth.) were popping bottles of champagne for the audience as they opened with So Shy, their unique blend of 80’s synth pop transforming STUDIO COAST into a dance hall.  They also debuted their new single, Youth, a cool, new wave ballad off of their upcoming 2nd album Bright As Diamonds.  Afterward the stage was reset for the telephones while Jin had his last set at the DJ booth.

the telephones:  Last up were the telephones, it was great to see them take the final spot after playing 4th at Kings Jr.  Nobu rushed to the front of the stage, posing and teasing the fans by pulling his Kings t-shirt down over his shoulder as the other members entered.  They took their places and launched into Monkey Discooooooo, immediately whipping the excited crowd into a frenzy. They followed up with sick rocks and A.B.C. Disco, everyone waving their hands back and forth and singing along with the chorus.  Then Ishige announced the new song, YEAH YEAH YEAH, off of their appropriately titled new album, Rock Kingdom.  Nobu disappeared for awhile, only to return in a pink mirrorball shirt for Urban Disco and HABANERO, during which they spent every last once of energy leading up to their closing number, I Hate Discooooooo.  They exited the stage, leaving Ishige with his pedals, and as the distortion faded he stood and waved to the crowd, delivering his heartfelt thanks, “この時代に生まれてきて良かったです. ありがとう!”

They returned for a one song encore with Love and Disco, which Kahadio joined them onstage in his underwear to announce.  All of the Kings members came out during the song (Yone and kaoru crowd-surfed in from the back) and afterward they took the time to thank the fans, ask for the return of FREE THROW DJ Tsurusaki Makoto’s shoe, and take a group photo.  There was no announcement regarding Kings 4, but Ishige closed the night by saying that he wanted the next installment to be even bigger.  I, for one, can’t wait to be there.

the telephones live DVD double release

UPDATE: the telephones have also announced a special festival season release, scheduled for July 20th: the 100% DISCO HITS! SUMMER PACK (pictured below).  It will contain 7 tracks including the new song DISCO AGE MONSTERS and retail for ¥2,500.

the telephones will soon be releasing live DVDs of last winter’s SUPER DISCO HITS 3 and 4 at ディファ有明 (on sale dates are May 25th and June 8th respectively).  EMI Japan has created promotional digests for both releases (embedded below) and the band announced earlier today on their official website that they’ll be participating in two special talk events.  The first will be held at Shibuya Tower Records on May 30th for fans purchasing SUPER DISCO HITS 3 and the second will be held at Shinjuku Tower Records on June 13th for fans purchasing SUPER DISCO HITS 4.  As a special bonus for purchasing the DVDs at Tower Records fans will also receive SUPER DISCO Hits2!!!  PART1 (with DISCO HITS 3) and PART2 (with DISCO HITS 4).

5/1 Kings Jr.@新代田FEVER

The Brixton Academy:  Before the event officially started Yone (Gt./Synth., TBA) and Jin Hirofumi (FREE THROW) were out on the floor popping open bottles of champagne and passing them off to eager concert goers, while Taira Daisuke (FREE THROW) handled the DJ booth.  When it came time for TBA’s set Naoto (Vo./Gt./Synth.) and Yone each entered carrying bottles of champagne which they uncorked simultaneously and handed out to the crowd as well.  They then proceeded to play the best set of British New Wave that you’ll ever hear from a Japanese band.  Halfway through their set Nobu (the telephones) ran out into the crowd, where he was hoisted up on the shoulders of the fans, acting as a one man cheering section.  Afterward, Yone came out in front of the DJ booth for Jin’s first set, where he twisted to The Ramones’ Blitzkrieg Bop while encouraging the crowd to do the same.

THE BAWDIES:  THE BAWDIES took the stage next and tore into their set like bats out of hell.  They played B.P.B, JUST BE COOL, and the special BAWDIES only version of LOVE YOU NEED YOU to name a few.  When Roy (who was dripping sweat) asked Taxmen how he stayed so cool, he replied that the other members were just weak.  They also recommended eating hot dogs (before playing HOT DOG).  After they left the stage, Jin had his second set at the DJ booth.

QUATTRO:  QUATTRO came on third, and they were entertaining as usual.  They ended their set with Hey!, as Ishige and Ryohei (the telephones) watched from backstage.  Taira followed them with his second set at the DJ booth.

the telephones:  Amazing.  They played a bit of an unusual set (including the rallying cry “WE ARE KINGS!”), but ended with Love and Disco as fans have come to expect.  As the other members made their exit, Nobu ran shirtless through the crowd, kidnapped a fan, and pulled him on stage (to cheers and applause) before returning him to the floor and exiting stage right.

PILLS EMPIRE:  Naoya Empire (Vo.) came out caped in mystery (literally, he was wearing a hooded cape), and PILLS EMPIRE proceeded to utterly destroy!  Naoya was up to his usual antics (hanging from the ceiling, stage diving/crowd surfing, and moshing with the fans) all while a live video feed was projected on the wall.  At one point he even climbed over some very nervous looking DJs and their very expensive looking equipment, finally unplugging his mic and running wild through the crowd.  They returned for a one-song encore with ‘Demophobia’.

When all was said and done, everyone came out to say thank you to the fans and announce that it will all be happening again at their next event, Kings 3, which will be held on August 23rd at 新木場STUDIO COAST.

4/14 「We Love JAPAN!!! Tour - season 2 -」@渋谷O-East

(photo by Ishige Akira (the telephones))

killing Boy: killing Boy is kind of like the rock super group of side projects, formed by Rikki (ART-SCHOOL, Vo./Gt.) and Hinatch (STRAIGHTENER/Nothing’s Carved in Stone, Ba.), and using Ito Shinichi (HINTO, Gt.) and Okita Takanori (Nothing’s Carved in Stone, Dr.) as regular support. It was my first time seeing them live and I’m happy to report that they put on a really impressive performance, probably best described as ‘totally fucking rad’. They began their set with Frozen Music, spotlighting Hinatch’s bass intro, before launching into a full band jam. Rikki looked happier than usual (I always seem to catch him at shows where he’s either nervous or sleepy) and the mood was generally really positive. Before their last song they passed a hand mic around so that each of the members could say something, which got a huge reaction from the crowd. Only Hinatch declined as they were running a bit short on time.

Sokabe Keiichi Band: They had a very cool classic rock vibe (their equipment cases were tagged with a logo proclaiming Sokabe Keiichi the ‘king of mellow rock’) and I enjoyed their set a lot. One of the highlights of their set was the song TELEPHONE LOVE, which includes various call and response sections, including one that goes “T-E-L-E-P-H-O-N-E Yeah Yeah TELEPHONE LOVE” (I’ll let you guess the percentage of telephones fans who can actually spell ‘telephone’). They ended with 魔法のバスに乗って and STARS, both of which were amazing. Check them out if you haven’t yet.

the telephones: The band’s escapades, were plentiful as always, Ishige turned around and shook his moneymaker at the crowd while Nobu flailed about and took off his clothes (he also failed to make his drum stick catch, but don’t tell anyone). Just your average run-of-the-mill telephones concert. They played the new songs Punk Is Not Heavy Metal and White Elephant, and at the very end of the night Nobu took over Seiji’s drum set for an original composition that resembled something Animal (The Muppets) would produce. But the big news out of tonight’s show came during the encore when Ishige made the following announcement:

On December 23rd, 2011, the telephones will hold their final show of the year (「SUPER DISCO Hits Final!!! ーそして伝説へー」) at SAITAMA SUPER ARENA!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Charity releases and artist response to Friday’s disaster

Yesterday I posted details about how to make a donation to the Japanese Red Cross (both directly and through 糸色-Itoshiki-) in order to support the victims of last Friday’s earthquake and tsunami which have absolutely devastated Japan’s Tohoku region.  I would also like to mention that there has been a tremendous outreach from the Japanese music community, that began immediately following the initial earthquake with artists utilizing Twitter (and other forms of social media) to quickly spread important news and information.  On Friday night, live houses in many cities opened their doors offering food, water, shelter, and electricity to those stranded after public transportation was shut down.  And acoustic charity events have been held in Tokyo on a nightly basis since Sunday, to raise money while still complying with the Japanese government’s request to conserve electricity.
The aforementioned 糸色-Itoshiki website and MUSICA’s HOPE for TOMORROW contain messages of hope from many artists expressing their concern for those affected by the disaster, but this is just a small portion of the dialogue.  Music is also a part of it and below I’m including information on various musical projects which benefit charity.  Please take the time to look at them.

Tokumaru Shugo’s new single “Open a Bottle” is available here for ¥100 or more.  Payment by all major credit cards is accepted and the full amount of proceeds will be donated to help the victims of the earthquake off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku.

QUATTRO’s new single “ZZZ” is available from the Japanese iTunes Store for ¥150, with all of the proceeds going to charity.

LITE’s new single “Rabbit” is also available from the Japanese iTunes Store and OTOTOY (WAV or MP3) for ¥200, all of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

Starting tomorrow (March 17th) at 5:00pm JST, the Japanese music download site OTOTOY will begin distribution of a six volume charity compilation entitled Play for Japan.  Each volume will sell for ¥1000, payments accepted by credit card.  95% of proceeds will go to the Japanese Red Cross, while 5 % will go to cover credit card processing fees (except in the case that the contributed song is managed by copyrights, in which case, 87.3% of the proceeds will go to charity, 7.7% to royalties, and 5% to processing fees).

UPDATE:
suzumoku’s charity song, “僕らは人間だ” (bokura wa ningen da), can now be purchased from Amazon.co.jp for ¥500.  The full amount of proceeds will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross.

toe’s new single “Ordinary Days” is available from both the Japanese and English iTunes Stores (for ¥200 and $0.99 respectively), with the proceeds going to either the Japan Platform or Save the Children.

Ishige Akira (the telephones) announced yesterday on his blog that an untitled charity single under his solo name would be available from the Japanese iTunes Store for ¥150 starting today (March 24th).

andymori’s charity single 兄弟 (kyoudai), is now available for purchase via the Japanese iTunes Store, レコチョク, and Amazon.co.jp!
