10/20 DaisyBar Autumn Fes 2011~RAW LIVE 2011~@下北沢Daisy Bar

のび太 (Nobita): WHITE ASH is a band that I’m familiar with in name only, but now I might have to check them out. Nobita was good, he has a great sense of humor and a clear voice that works just as well for rock songs as it does for ballads. After telling the crowd that he was nervous (this being his 2nd solo performance ever), he explained that he was opening because no one was confident that his songs could be rearranged for this kind of thing. Then he covered Perfume’s マカロニ, doing his best to maintain some of the original choreography despite having to play the guitar at the same time.

入江良介 (Irie Ryosuke): Before his set Ryosuke came out for an extended sound check, chatting with the audience and messing around with a few covers. He was on stage for so long that the sound booth thought that he was ready to start, dimming the lights and cutting the BGM. He assured them that he wasn’t and came back in 5 minutes, officially kicking things off with a bit of karaoke (for both Sun Valley and OK master he ignored his guitar, choosing to sing along to the masters of unreleased Veni Vidi Vicious demos instead). When he finally sat down to play, he surprised the audience with two covers, an oddly sentimental rendition of 踊ってばかりの国’s 悪魔の子供 and a ballsy, but sincere performance of QUATTRO’s Time Time Time (Iwamoto also played it, declaring ‘本物!’). 恋する囚人 has been available as a MySpace demo for quite some time and Ryosuke mentioned that if anyone wanted the recording they could send an e-mail to the band’s official address and he would give it to them before continuing with the songbook classics プカプカ and お嫁においで. He broke into a few bars of KARA’s Mister before declaring ‘分からないっす’ and after checking the time continued with a slightly melancholy cover of BLANKEY JET CITY’s SWEET DAYS. His next song, which he introduced as ギター弾き, would have made for a wonderful closer, but Iwamoto was running late so he expanded his set to include 森 and Free Way 3.

Setlist:
1. Sun Valley
2. OK
3. 悪魔の子供 (踊ってばかりの国 cover)
4. Time Time Time (QUATTRO cover)
5. 恋する囚人
6. プカプカ (Nishioka Kyozo cover)
7. お嫁においで (Kayama Yuzo cover)
8. SWEET DAYS (BLANKEY JET CITY cover)
9. ギター弾き (New Song)
10. 森
11. Free Way 3

岩本岳士 (Iwamoto Takeshi): I saw Iwamoto perform without QUATTRO for the first time at 下北沢commune a few months back and it was amazing, he and Matsuzaka Yusuke (QUATTRO) played for nearly 3 hours in a space designed to hold no more than 30 people. Although the setting wasn’t nearly as intimate this time around, he managed to create the same laid-back atmosphere and in addition to some great acoustic versions of QUATTRO songs, he treated the audience to some excellent covers. My personal favorite was My Eyes, but The Gardener and There’s Nothing I Can Do (an audience request that took him quite a while to decipher) were also pretty high on the list. Flamingo was a standout, as was the solo piece beginning ‘It’s 9 o’clock in the morning…’ that he played after Time Time Time. He was definitely worth the wait.

Setlist:
1. Oh Susanna
2. Flamingo
3. 新曲 (New Song)
4. My Eyes (Travis cover)
5. Time Time Time
6. 新曲 (New Song)
7. The Gardener (The Tallest Man On Earth cover)
8. He Doesn’t Know Why (Fleet Foxes cover)
9. There’s Nothing I can Do (Jesse Harris cover)
10. Along The Sands
11. Question#7

佐々木亮介 (Sasaki Ryosuke): Sasaki Ryosuke is unbelievable live, even the best recordings in a flood of circle’s discography don’t do him justice (particularly when it comes to acoustic). He ripped into his set with Human License and 泥水のメロディー, followed by a really strong performance of ガラパゴス. Between songs he reminisced about the good old days and told stories about his experiences before forming a band. He included his impressions of the other performers, commenting jokingly on Irie Ryosuke ‘なんか最終すげえ感じ悪くて’. Ryosuke cried ‘ひどい!’, and Sasaki began his next song with a quiet intro, that shifted abruptly when he shouted ‘さあ、準備しよう!’ and burst into a fast-paced, rockabilly number. SWIMMING SONG was stunning and emotional, but the mood lightened again quickly when he announced a SISTER JET cover and a somewhat drunk Wataru.S decided to join him onstage. YU-REI Song is a quick, but soft song with a Halloween motif, which he followed with a performance of I LOVE YOU that was good enough to be a closer. Luckily though, he stuck around for an incredible acoustic ballad, during which he went completely off-mic, shouting into the crowd with everything he had left. He exited to no shortage of well-deserved applause. After about 10 minutes of hurried setup, rearranging the stage for two more guitars and a drum set, Ryosuke, Wataru, and Kensuke. A (Dr., SISTER JET) joined him for a somewhat touch-and-go but generally recognizable cover of Veni Vidi Vicious’ Cosmo.

Setlist:
1. Human License
2. 泥水のメロディー
3. ガラパゴス
4. 賭け (Bet! Bet! Bet!) (New Song)
5. SWIMMING SONG
6. to you (w/ Wataru S., SISTER JET cover)
7. YU-REI Song (New Song)
8. I LOVE YOU
10. 新曲 (New Song)
Encore (w/ Irie Ryosuke (Veni Vidi Vicious), Wataru.S and Kensuke. A (SISTER JET))
11. COSMO (Veni Vidi Vicious cover)

Veni Vidi Vicious – 悪い方 PV

Good Days is due out on October 5th, but you can watch the disturbingly good music video for 悪い方 (Warui Hou) right now!

9/22 QUATTRO Tour 2011 “My Banjo On Your Knee”@池下CLUB UPSET

I was pretty disappointed when I found out that I wouldn’t be able to make QUATTRO’s 2011 release tour in Tokyo, particularly when they announced that Veni Vidi Vicious would be supporting. Rather than miss out completely, I decided to hop down to Nagoya’s CLUB UPSET for their September 22nd show. The September 21st typhoon complicated things a bit, but a last minute decision to take the Shinkansen allowed me to get to the show on time and, despite the less than stellar turnout, I’ve got no complaints.

Veni Vidi Vicious: Veni Vidi Vicious kicked things off with a bang, leading with familiar classics Ano-Hacienda and Cosmo. Then, after a slightly reverberated MC, they gave the Nagoya crowd a preview of what’s to come with a set of 4 new songs. First were 悪い方 and the recently released demo, Golden Brown, followed by a ballad that I first heard them play at CLUB251 and 犬, a slightly edgier, fast-paced song. After that Ryosuke announced the end of their set, finishing with the cult-favorite Yeah Yeah Yeah and the incredible title track off of their upcoming album, Good Days.

Setlist:
1. Ano-Hacienda
2. Cosmo
3. 悪い方
4. Golden Brown
5. 月面ディスコ
6. 犬
7. Yeah Yeah Yeah
8. Good Days

QUATTRO: This was QUATTRO’s first show with new support bassist, Hamada Masamichi (ex.riddim saunter). They began their set with Magic J, and a not-so-new but as-yet-unreleased surf-pop song (out of the 3 songs that I’ve listed as new, only the song after Time Time Time is actually recent). They followed up immediately with ZZZ and another unreleased song (this one had the fans bobbing along and tapping their toes thanks to the constant, quick tambourine rhythm). Then Iwamoto thanked the crowd, saying that it was their first tour in about a year and a half, and introduced Hama before continuing with Time Time Time. I was happy to hear Flamingo, which begins with ‘Sugar, sugar…’, and they followed it with another unreleased song (a slow, lilting ballad). Things picked up after that as they prepared to end their set, transitioning into Differences and continuing with a slew of upbeat, classics. Once again they used a short version of Oh Susanna as the intro to Question#7, then Iwamoto announced their final two songs, ending on a positive note with JOY OF A TOY and every fan’s favorite Hey. They came back for an two song encore, the full version of Oh Susanna and an upbeat performance of Fools.

Setlist:
1. Magic J
2. Fun Run
3. ZZZ
4. Summertime
5. Time Time Time
6. Flamingo
7. ほどけた靴紐
8. Differences
9. Oh Susanna
10. Question#7
11. JOY OF A TOY
12. Hey
Encore
13. Oh Susanna
14. Fools
