siamese cats have just announced their first full-length album in over three and a half years! たからじま (Takarajima) is scheduled for release by P-VINE RECORDS on December 5th with a retail price of ¥2,500. The new album will contain 12 songs, including the single 渚 (previously released on CD and 7″ vinyl). They are planning a special release event with Nagoya band 紙コップス (kamikops) on December 13th at 渋谷WWW, as well as a release tour beginning next February.

Before last night, I hadn’t been to a proper FREE THROW in almost a year, but that’s not to say I haven’t seen these guys around. They’re a very busy group, Jin and Tsurusaki regularly DJ’d at MARZ while Taira was the booker, FREE THROW is an integral member of the Kings collective along with PILLS, TBA, QUATTRO and the telephones, and they recently took the monthly all-night event on tour, hosting parties in major cities across Japan (like FREE THROW SAITAMA). In any case, Vol. 58 was a pleasant return, complete with a performance from one of my current favorite bands シャムキャッツ and a guest appearance at the end of the night by a half-naked taro sci-fi.
The curtain was still rising on the MARZ stage as siamese cats started off their set with シンバシー, then followed up with another new song that I’ve heard them play a lot recently. GET BACK moved their set in a different direction and then Natsume delivered the kind of MC that one hopes to hear at 1:30 in the morning. It went something like, “(unintelligible muttering) えっと、行きます！改めましてこんばんは。シャムキャッツです。Yeah…yeah, FREE THROW yeah…yeah…yeah, FREE THROW yeah…” I always remember ビキニ as a sort of calm, quiet song, but the heavy guitars and shouted harmonies toward the end make it a nice lead-in to アメリカ, which they performed guns blazing. After commenting on Taira’s choice of shirt they continued with 落ち着かないのさ and a quick new song that slows down and dissolves in the end for a really nice finish. They used it as the lead-in to 渚 (which Jin threw in again at the end of the night as a kind of thank you), then closed with 不安でも移動, which is fast becoming one of my favorite live songs. Good band, great show, and the party continued…
