9/30 sleepy.ac tour 2011@北沢タウンホール

5 very sleepy moments:

  1. Their cover of Taniyama Hiroko’s まっくら森の歌 was proof that a ‘みんなのうた x sleepy’ cover album would be extremely successful.  Someone with the right connections should call NHK and make it happen.
  2. In the middle of palette, Yamauchi jumped off stage and ran to the back of the theater wielding a Russian doll-shaped instrument that made screechy, washboard noises.  He didn’t seem to have a plan for what to do next so he just kind of stood there adding sad little noises to the song until Nariyama called him back.
  3. Before シエスタ, Nariyama encouraged audience members to take a nap mid-set, then he and Tanaka exchanged a few stories about people falling asleep at their shows.  He called, ‘おやすみなさい’ as they began the song.
  4. Their new song, SWEET, was beautiful and they followed it with かくれんぼ bringing the main part of their set to a lovely close.
  5. During the encore Yamauchi played a 3-song ocarina solo, including Auld Lang Syne.

7/1 KONEN TE RIC@渋谷O-West

Schroeder-Headz: Here’s a fun fact. The trio apparently took their name from the lovable, piano playing Peanuts character. After leading with a variation on the classic Snoopy theme, they played a set of feel good instrumentals that managed to capture some spirit of spontaneity without straying into the realm of improv jazz. Keyboardist, Watanabe Shunsuke, was a riot and he got equal parts laughter and applause whenever he approached the microphone (I was particularly fond of his failed attempt at whistling).

ent: ent is STRAIGHTENER frontman Horie Atsushi’s solo project. Confessional Midwest folk rock circa 1998 reinvented for Tokyo audiences in 2011. This time around the distortion isn’t born from tape hiss but complicated guitar loops and delicately patterned keys. And it works, they were extremely impressive.

sleepy.ab: They played a much darker set than usual, and it was nice to see sleepy.ab at their heaviest. Scene was breathtaking, accompanied by hard strobes, and when they answered calls for an encore with かくれんぼ it was like the calm after a massive storm.

1. マザーグース
2. アクアリウム

sleepy.ab – Mother Goose

Today marks the official release of sleepy.ab’s new album, Mother Goose!  I picked mine up yesterday at Tower, where it came with a bonus live DVD (containing the studio session at Art Park, which was broadcast live, January 30th on USTREAM).  All copies of the album also include access to a special phone reservation number (operated by Lawson), allowing fans to purchase tickets for the bands upcoming oneman tour (dates below).  My friend and I will be attending the tour final at 東京グローブ座 on April 30th.
To celebrate the release, SPACE SHOWER TV’s mob will host a special USTREAM program with the band tonight beginning at 21:00 JST (watch it here). The show will include a sampling of songs from the new album, a quiz segment, and presents!

To celebrate the album’s completion sleepy.ab will also be hosting a special in-studio live at Art Park in Sapporo, where Mother Goose was recorded. Their performance will be broadcast live on USTREAM from about 19:00-20:00 JST on Sunday, January 30th. Mark your calendars.
